Jean-Philippe Komac, Erik Taelemans and Jan Samyn are more than willing to show everybody behind the scenes: what does it take to become a drummer. There’s not only the versatility on the different instruments, the constraint of different styles (classic and modern) and the difference between repertoire and improvisation. Also composing will be illustrated.

Jean-Philippe Komac is a professional musician since 1981 and played in the meantime almost every style with a lot of different artists. He went classic with the Muntschouwburg orchestra and VRO, performed in musicals and rock operas (Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, My Fair Lady), played jazz with Dee Daniels, Deborah Brown, Chris Joris, Frank Vaganee, Michel Legrand, Jimmy Molière (New Orleans, USA) and in big bands (Boom Big Band, Concord Jazz Ensemble Kortrijk, PDM-bigband Oudenaarde), played pop music with Tom Van Landuyt, Mozaiek, Sunny Side Up and Coco Jr., chanson with Johan Verminnen, Connie Neefs, Nicole en Hugo, Will Tura and Bart Vanden Bossche. He played scores for film (‘De Potloodmoorden’), TV series (‘Bex & Blanche’, ‘Wittekerke’, ‘2 straten verder’, ‘Van vlees en bloed’) and radio plays (‘De Keizer en de nachtegaal’, ‘Wilde Zwanen’) and a lot of commercials (, Shoe Discount, Humo, Flair, O’Cool, etc).
He has been teaching ‘Rhythm’ for several years at the Studio Herman Teirlinck. Today, he’s teaching ‘Percussion’ at the Kunsthumaniora van Brussel with Erik Taelemans and Jan Samyn.

Erik Taelemans studied percussion at the Conservatory of Brussels under the direction of Ferdinand De Poppe, Gert François and Bob Van Sice and Chamber music under Arie Van Lysebeth. He worked as a freelance musician in the eighties for the VRT, Muntschouwburg, Nationaal Orkest, Opera van Vlaanderen and finally the Ballet van Vlaanderen. In the nineties he focused on composing and performing with small ensembles (a.o. the percussion band ’Caedimus’ and the ‘Cuarteto Nuevo’ ensemble) or as a duo with clarinet player Jurgen Wayenberg of guitar player Gilbert Isbin.
Today, he teaches at the Academies of Alsemberg, Anderlecht and Blankenberge and is often asked for workshops and clinics. Erik is an eclectic character. You will find him playing keyboards, kettledrums, percussion and drums. He still performs in duo form, with flutist Ilse Vromans amongst other. He has been playing with several rock bands, brass bands and is member of the orchestras of Orlandus and of Chapelle de Lorraine.

Jan Samyn started to study percussion under the direction of Charles Vanhoutte at the Academy of Huizingen. He moved to the Conservatory of Brussels in 1996 and studied under the direction of Bart Quartier, Gert Francois, Frank Michiels and Garcia Morales. He graduaded in percussion and continued at the Conservatory of Gent to study drums under the guidance of Mimi Verderame and Arnout Gerritse.
